Nursing Assistant Alumni Spotlight

Kamdyn Mester, Class of 2025

I am currently employed as a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) at a long-term and rehabilitation facility.
This position has been both demanding and fulfilling, allowing me to observe directly the kind of empathy, endurance, and competence required to genuinely care for others. I can state with confidence that my experience at Combs High School's Nursing Assistant program was crucial in helping me reach my current position.
The CTE (Career and Technical Education) curriculum helped me grasp what it meant to be a nursing assistant in addition to preparing me for the technical parts of the job. It accelerated my progress by giving me practical experience, classroom knowledge, and the self-assurance to enter the workforce immediately following high school. I'm confident that without this program, I would be far less motivated to pursue my goals.
I have always had an interest in nursing, particularly after experiencing my brother's hospital stay. Early on, I became passionate after witnessing the nurses' care for him. But I didn't really comprehend the responsibilities of the nursing profession until I started the CTE program and received CNA training.
The course strengthened my enthusiasm, provided practical knowledge, and deepened my love for the field. Nursing always sparked my interest, especially after seeing my brother's hospitalization. Seeing how the nurses took care of him early on deepened my passion for the field. However, it wasn't until I began my CNA training that I truly understood the duties of the nursing profession.
My passion for the field was reinforced by the course, which also gave me useful information. I genuinely don't know where I would be now if Combs hadn't offered the nursing assistant program. It helped mold not only my future but also my identity as someone who aspires to use healthcare to change the world by opening opportunities I never even knew existed. More than just a job route, the Career and Technical Education program provided me with guidance, experience, and the will to keep going for my dreams. I'm really appreciative of everything the program has taught me, and I'm eager to pursue my nursing career further.
