Hello, my name is Jeremiah Poirier. Today I am writing to discuss the CTE programs that were instrumental in shaping both my education and career path.

My interest in theater began freshman year of high school, with a passion for lighting design. At Queen Creek High School, I completed their respective Stagecraft CTE program, but wanted to continue further. I knew I wanted to intern in a theater setting, but my school did not offer such an opportunity.

That’s when my teacher connected me with Corianna Lee, who welcomed me as an intern in Combs High School’s CTE Theater program.
That single year at Combs was incredibly impactful. I had the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals, serve as head lighting designer for multiple productions, gain hands-on experience, and build a professional network that would lead to paid work down the road.

While I learned valuable skills during my three years in Queen Creek’s program, I truly believe my time at Combs provided me with the most professional growth. The knowledge, mentorship, and opportunities I received there resulted in a series of achievements that shaped my career:

Nominated for “Best Lighting in a High School Musical” at ASU Gammage, competing against 25 high schools statewide.

Winner of the Thespy Award for “Best Lighting” at the 2023 International Thespian Festival at IU Bloomington. After earning a “Superior” at the state level to qualify, then competing against hundreds internationally. [Link to interview]

Freelance lighting designer for Inspire Dance Company, where I collaborated with several Broadway actors. This opportunity was made possible through my network initially established at Combs.

Backstage Technical Assistant at ASU Gammage, assisting in loading in traveling Broadway productions. This was a job I secured through a contact I met in the Combs CTE program.

Today, I minor in theater at ASU, work at ASU Gammage, and serve as a carpenter at Childsplay. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the Combs CTE program. The combination of hands-on experience and access to industry professionals allowed me to earn awards, create freelance opportunities, and open doors to work in some of Arizona’s most prominent theaters.

I am confident that without my time at Combs, I would not be where I am today. These experiences were only possible because of strong, well-funded CTE programs.
