Kalie Hagen, Class of 2018

I joined the CTE program as a transfer student from Minnesota, where we didn't have a theatre educational program. When I started at Combs, I was over the moon to have classes that aligned with my passion of working on theatrical productions. The amount of support that I received from my teacher Mr. Smith helped keep that spark alive in not only myself but my classmates. Being a part of the Theatre program, we produced two main stage shows and a few improv nights after school that I was able to work on and gain additional skills that I learned about in class but got to put into practice. I loved being able to spend my time after school working on shows and having a group of people that shared the same passions I did.

With Mr. Smith's encouragement I received a nomination to go to the National Thespian Festival where I had the chance to interview with colleges around the nation.
I received 23 callbacks and knew that I could make a career out of my passion. I didn’t know it at the time but looking back I was able to expand my skill set and look at problems in a new light based on my education through the CTE program and it has helped me get out of challenging situations many times.

After receiving my Associates through Mesa Community College for Technical Theatre I went on to work as a Stage Manager for The Phoenix Theatre Company, Childsplay Theatre Company, Order Chaos Theatre, Combs Performing Arts Center and The Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Phoenix. I am now the Production Stage Manager with The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
